Jason Gutheil brings over two decades of coaching experience to the New York Shockers
Women’s Premier Soccer (WPSL) Team, serving as Goalkeeping Coach. For the past 24 years, Jason
has worked alongside his wife, Head Coach Laurie Darling Gutheil, and has been instrumental in
shaping one of the most successful goalkeeping programs in collegiate soccer.
A Legacy of Excellence in Goalkeeping Development
Since joining the coaching staff in 2005, Jason has dedicated himself to developing top-tier
goalkeepers, helping produce three All-American goalkeepers—Lauren Steinberg (2007),
Deanna Esposito (2010), and Marika Laurendeau (2020)—as well as numerous other standout players.
He played a crucial role in the success of Jessica Gerski (2013), who was part of the 2011 National
Championship team at The College of Saint Rose, and Susan Cowan (2010), who led the nation in
goals-against-average
with a remarkable 0.15 GAA in 2009.
Under his tutelage, several other goalkeepers have earned All-Region and All-Conference honors, with players like Shannon Murphy (2009) and Ashley Homer (2014) securing spots among Saint Rose's all-time leaders in GAA and save percentage.
Record-Breaking Impact
Jason’s coaching has had a lasting impact on the program, with six of his goalkeepers ranking among the top in the Northeast-10 Conference in save percentage and goals-against-average. In fact, the top three single-season GAA marks in conference history belong to a Saint Rose goalkeeper, and the program has consistently led the conference in team GAA for several seasons. His success in developing elite goalkeepers is reflected in the fact that four of the top-five career GAA marks in conference history are held by players under his mentorship.
A Trusted Voice in Recruiting and Game Analysis
In addition to his focus on skill development and tactics, Jason plays a key role in recruiting and game analysis. His deep understanding of the game, combined with his analytical approach, ensures that the team consistently fields a strong, competitive squad. Jason’s strategic insights help guide both his goalkeepers and defenders, working to fine-tune their performances for peak efficiency.
Proven Success at the Highest Level
Jason's expertise has been instrumental in the success of Saint Rose’s program, which has reached the NCAA National Semifinals (Final Four) seven times, and earned multiple NE10 regular-season titles and NE10 Championship Tournament appearances during his tenure. His contributions to these achievements have helped cement the Golden Knights as a powerhouse in NCAA Division II women’s soccer.
Looking to the Future
With a wealth of experience and a passion for developing elite goalkeepers, Jason Gutheil is committed to furthering the growth and success of the New York Shockers. His proven track record of excellence in both coaching and player development will be a valuable asset as the Shockers continue to build a championship-caliber team in the WPSL.
